Avoiding physical challenges
Physical well-being is a major concern for some people who would like to see Everest. Trekking to altitudes over 5000 meters and sleeping at night becomes more of a task, a task that because of the lack of acclimatization can induce AMS/Acute Mountain Sickness which includes symptoms such as headache, nausea, shortness of breath and can be possibly fatal. This is a concern to anyone, especially one with a family history of heart disorders or someone who has never been to such high altitudes. Trekking also involves long-duration exertion, something that is sometimes not possible for people with knee or back problems. Recently, there have been more and more people with legendary Everest dreams who cannot fulfill their dreams due to the biological aging process, some as young as 50. This is unfortunate for some who go their whole life, having the means yet unable to achieve their dreams. Finally, some people are just not into trekking. It's quite hard to believe, but some people just don't like walking.
Spectacular aerial views
Particularly for trekkers doing any route that involves crossing a high pass, or trekking in the Everest or Annapurna regions, if you want to soak up the views of the high Himalayas, getting a mountain flight at the beginning or end of your trek is highly recommended. Because during these treks, the lower valleys often remain cloudy or foggy, and it is common for trekkers to spend a week stuck in bad weather at high altitudes, without getting any views of the mountains. Helicopter flights are not so dependent on specific weather and can fly when most domestic flights are grounded.
Spring Season (March to May)
Spring (March to May) is mainly divided into two months of pre-monsoon and two months of post-monsoon. This is the time when the trekkers are in high spirits and have a huge hit on visiting the EBC since they believe it is the best time to be there. On the other hand, it is also the climbing season, and the able climbers have a similar perception of the Everest Summit.
Autumn Season (September to November)
Autumn is another best time to visit Everest Base Camp and the best season for trekking in the Everest region. This season is also the peak season in Nepal and is considered the festival season as there are two biggest festivals of Nepalese Dashain and Tihar Falls during this season. The Autumn season offers excellent weather and a short clear sky which provides a magnificent view of mountain vistas. The temperature is moderate and guarantees an amazing mountain view. Autumn is a great time to do the Everest base camp trek. The monsoon will have just finished, and the skies will be clear. The days are still warm, and the evenings are cool. The temperature varies between 20 and 25 degrees in the daytime, to a minimum of -15 to a maximum of 20 degrees in the night.
Winter
Winter in the mountains brings very cold temperatures and more chance of sudden weather changes. Please do not attempt to visit the region by any means during the winter months unless you are very experienced and properly equipped for high-altitude winter mountaineering. Flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are often canceled in winter, and the trek up to the mountains can be dangerous due to the ice and snow on the trails. The lodges along the trail are not well insulated and can be very cold inside at night.
Summer
If you happen to be on a trip to visit Everest during the monsoon months of June to August (and we don't recommend this if it can be helped), then you should prepare for frequent flight delays at the Kathmandu end of the journey. The clouds and rain can also make landing at Lukla somewhat more precarious, so there is always a chance that you could be delayed on your return from Lukla to Kathmandu.
Weather Conditions
The weather at Everest Base Camp is highly unpredictable. It is said, "There's no trust in Himalayan weather." So, it's always a good idea to be prepared for the worst. Generally, in the Everest region, the temperatures drop at an average of 6.5°C for every 1000m gain in altitude. This results in quite a variation of temperatures. For example, during the day, temperatures can range from 15°C to 20°C. However, during the night, temperatures can drop as low as -20°C, even in the summer. At higher altitudes, temperatures range from 20°C to 35°C during the day and can get as low as -25°C to -40°C during the night. Snowfall in the region is highly dependent on the time of the year, so this should be taken into consideration for when to trek to Everest Base Camp. Snowfall is common in January, February, and the later autumn months of November and December. The monsoon seasons of June, July, August, and September can be a very uncomfortable and sometimes leech-infested trek. The best time to trek to Everest Base Camp is in the following two periods. The first is from the end of March to the end of May. The second is from the beginning of September to mid-October. This is when the weather is at its best and the visibility for the mountains is optimal. Note that the temperatures stated above are a rough estimate, and it can change due to the variability of weather patterns each year.
Costs of Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour
In a similar vein, it is possible to do the trek/helicopter tour more cheaply than the lowest-priced tours we found, however, I would postulate that there is a certain level of quality and safety below which it would be unwise to travel. Step one in deciding on a tour operator is to think realistically about how much money you are willing to spend on your trip of a lifetime, considering long-term financial implications and the opportunity cost of other, potentially more worthwhile expenditures of money. A cost-benefit analysis would be useful here – what level of comfort/safety/quality are you receiving for the price, and how does this compare to trekking, or doing some other activity with the money on offer?
Safety measures on Everest Heli tour
Weather Check
During the months from May to September, the weather at Everest Base Camp and Lhasa is, as a rule, great for flying. The mornings are often brilliant and clear, with clouds accumulating in the night and clearing late during the evening. The monsoon period falls between June and August, and during this period, flight delays are normal. This happens because of the flight conditions created by the dampness in the air and generally poor visibility. On these occasions, the flight will either be postponed until the weather clears, redirected to an alternate destination (usually on the windward side of the mountains), or canceled altogether. This is mostly for the passengers' safety and to avoid potentially dangerous conditions in flying through clouds and snow squalls in the summer months. From the end of September through to November, the weather conditions improve with the end of the monsoon. Snow squall conditions aren't currently a factor until pre-winter when the monsoon retreats over to India. Flight operations throughout the winter months are unrealistic due to cold temperatures, snowfall, and tricky flying conditions. Flight operations, however, resume during pre-spring and spring when the weather is generally stable with high visibility.
Passenger Briefing
The briefing will take place just before passengers are due to embark. You're hiking or climbing boots, walking poles, crampons, or rucksacks should already be packed. You will be carrying a minimum extra weight into the helicopter. The briefing will cover the following: Where the helicopter landing site will be and that the pilot will have pointed this area out before landing. The general and basic rules of helicopter travel and what is expected of each passenger when embarking and disembarking. This is not complicated and is mainly for your safety. You will also be informed of the procedure of embarking and disembarking while the engine is running. This is for your safety, as the pilot will always keep the helicopter idling while passengers embark or disembark on alpine operations. Finally, you will be notified of how to use the helicopter seat belts and provided with a safety briefing on the Bell 407 model helicopter and its specific in-flight emergency procedures. Now it is time to feel the exhilaration and anticipation of being whisked away in a state-of-the-art machine, to be deposited amid the world's highest mountain range!
