Mardi Himal 10 Days Trek

Overview

The Mardi Himal 10-day trek is one of the most untouched trails in Nepal, which lets you get closely acquainted with the Annapurna region's untouched natural beauty. Beginning from the colorful town of Pokhara, this trek passes through splendid rhododendron forests, green terrains of paddy fields, and charming Gurung villages, providing a superb viewpoint. Gradually, the views change: you meet fascinating views of the most popular Machapuchare (Fishtail), Mardi Himal, and the Annapurna range to become the worthy background of your trekking.

This is a perfect match for those who want to trek in the Himalayas but do not want it to be loud and crowded. The trail tends to be traversed less by many trekkers than by other famous trails, and thus, the splendid tranquility of the region is great. It covers several geographical features, including forests and mountains, to arrive at the Mardi Himal Base Camp viewpoint at 4500m. Throughout the trail, you will spend the night in try-camping like Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp, giving differing views of the valley and the mountain tops.

Besides, there are also vibrant cultural experiences in the Mardi Himal trekking. The people you will be interacting with include the local Gurung and Magar, who can provide the essential understanding of their ancestors' ways of life. The welcome and friendliness of the people, along with the calm and the gorgeous mountains, make this trek a memorable one. Whether you are a true Trekking freak or a lover of natural beauties, Mardi Himal Trekking 10 Days offers the most attractive experiences of adventure trek, eye-catching natural assignments, and a cultural touch.

Geography Of The Mardi Himal

The main features of the geography of the region are high mountain ridges, steep slopes, and deep valleys fringed with moraines left by glaciers cutting through the terrain for hundreds and thousands of years. This gorgeous and constantly altering scenery adds to the entire rally, making Mardi Himal one of the most beautiful destinations in the Himalayas. Situated in the Annapurna region of Nepal, it provides a geographical and visually surprising experience that is dissimilar along its trekkers' path. Stretching to the east side of the highly traveled Annapurna Base Camp trek, Mardiimal stands at a height of 5,587m with the formation of Mount Annapurna massif. Before reaching the Mardi Himal Base Camp, there is a possibility of seeing almost all types of vegetation, from the subtropical to the alpine zones.

The lower stretches have many kinds of flora, including tall rhododendrons and oak trees thicker in the lower parts and stunning during April when the rhododendrons bloom. The further up you get, the more the forests taper off, and the land becomes made up of grasslands and steep mountains. The vegetation and soil gradually decrease, and large stones and boulders become characteristic of the high-altitude Himalayan region. This change of geography from the rich, green forest to the barren and unforgiving mountain ledge is one of the most notable aspects of the journey. The High Camp, and Mardi Himal Base Camp, are decorated with significant geographical features andand beautiful views of Mardi Himal and other mountains. The trekkers get to these points to view stunning views of Mardi Himal, Machapuchare (fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.

Why Choose Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is centrally located in the Annapurna Region and seems to have been discovered much less than the Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit treks. This exciting trekking experience will take you to an altitude of 4500 meters in the first four days, something no other trail can offer. It is very easy and well suited for beginners, but at the same time, it offers spiritual satisfaction for the walkers.

The Mardi Himal trek does not enter the central part of the Annapurna region with many tourists compared to the ABC (Annapurna base camp), Poon Hill, and Ghorepani trek; thus, one has the opportunity to have a beautiful natural experience. The real beauty of this trek is unveiled in the morning when the first rays of the sun reveal the great Fishtail Mountain (Machhapuchhre), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. The trek becomes covered in snow from March to April even at the lower elevations, although the snow is fresh. This just contributes to the experience and makes the game feel like climbing a mountain, which is actually what it is. Even though this is a short trek compared to many other treks in Nepal, the Mardi Hima trek is full of great and glamorous views and provides comfortable lodging. WiFi, hot showers, and charging are available from one tea house or lodge to another if one does not want to camp between the trails.

How Difficult Is The Mardi Himal Trek?

Generally, trekking to Mardi Himal Base Camp is considered moderate. Hence, hikers need to prepare themselves for at least moderate physical activity. This is a perfect adventurous activity for those who have trekked before and those who are first-timers in trekking, including children. The pathways are very clearly defined and, for the most part, not particularly challenging, and there are great views of the mountains along the way. Although two days have altitudes over 3,000 meters (9,842. 5 feet), this trekking is not high-altitude. Nevertheless, one should avoid particular physical exertion these days as it is dangerous for altitude sickness.

Most 'walks' last 6-7 hours, depending on the length of the day. The guides suggest spending as much time as possible on the trek without rushing through the terrain because the beauty of the region is well-deserved. This approach improves the quality of the trekking practices while decreasing the probability of fatigue or altitude stress.

Best Time For The Mardi Himal Trek

Similar to all other treks in the Nepali Himalayas, the ideal time for the Mardi Himal Trek is the Spring season (mid February to mid May) and the early winter or Autumn (September to mid December). However, if one is in search of a rather more secluded and 'pure' experience, one may effectively go for the Summer season, which, in spite of rainfall and leech presence, is also quite technically demanding.

Spring is perhaps one of the best seasons for the trek as the temperature averages 11 – 20 degrees Celsius for the lower region. In contrast, the higher regions are relatively colder. It is easy to see the mountains as the skies are clear, and the flowers – rhododendrons blooming at this time- are red and pink along the trails. Unlike the Annapurna Base Camp or EverestBase Camp treks, the Mardi Himal trek is not so crowded, even during the high spring season. Cold climate is felt at low altitudes because the mountains are covered by snow, giving the sensation of more significant climbing navigation. Several days will have a clear sky, resulting in the breathtaking sun rising over Mardi Himal.

Autumn has a temperature of around 8-15 degrees Celsius, which creates good weather for trekking. Because of the better climate for both trekking and the view of the mountains, Autumn can be named the best trekking season in Nepal. This season is characterized by clear skies and little or no precipitation, which gives one clear shot at the Himalayan range, especially Annapurna and Machhapuchhre. Although the trail might be slightly crowded in Summer, it isn't as crowded as other trekking trails in the region.

Summer has its problems as activities are conducted in the rain, trails become slippery, and there are leeches. Despite these challenges, some people love the complications caused by the season and view it as a perfect time for trekking. While on the summer treks, the plants are green, and the flowers bloom fully, presenting breathtaking views that cannot be observed in other seasons. Summer, if tried, it will be fun and challenging to attempt the trek since the views on the other side of the mountain are exclusive.

Today, we start our road travel to Pokhara, a beautiful city located at the base of the Himalayan range of the Annapurna. You have two options for travel: can be reached by a brief 25-minutes flight from Kathmandu’s Domestic Airport or it is 6-7 hours drive by car/jeep/ tourist bus.

Pokhara is one of the most naturally beautiful places to visit in Nepal with the range of Annapurna and the Machhapuchhre ranging on its backdrop. You can just take a walk along the Lakeside, take a leisurely boat ride in Phewa Lake, and enjoy the electrifying night life of the beautiful lake side city.

The stunning city of Pokhara truly captures that much needed mix of serenity and curiosity as it presents the visitors with a gateway to the splendid Annapurna.

This is the day the actual trekking adventure begins. Our trekking formally starts by getting on a car and reaching at Phedi which is about 8 km away from Pokhara. The first part of the trek from Phedi to Dhampus is moderately steep and the climb is worth the breathtaking view of the mountains, fresh air, nice people and other fellow trekkers. If you want to have the beautiful view of Mountains ranges of Himalayas then Dhampus is the place to have a brief stop and have a look around.

After crossing through a moderately wooded trail lined up with flowers and Rhododendrons, we are able to reach Pothana, where we spend the night. The hike carried out today is just a warm-up, which is to make us ready for the physical and theoretically more engaging trekking to be undertaken from the following day.

  • Max Altitude:2006m
  • Accommodation:Tea House/ Lodge
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Tea/Coffee

After having our breakfast in Pothana, we proceed towards Forest Camp. Therefore, we follow the trail surrounded by dense forests that accommodate oak, rhododendron, daphnia, hemlock, and maples among others. The oxygen level also increases in the higher elevation and the flora found at this altitude includes fresh mosses, lichen, orchids and even tree ferns which makes the surrounding look much more alive and beautiful.

The vegetation thins gradually and allows the traveler to get a better view of the more open terrains as well as the high towering mountains like the Machhapuchhre (also known as Fishtail), the massif of Annapurna and Mardi Himal. Tahans view of these magnificent mountains is a regular depiction of the glory of Himalayan proportions. Our hike ends at rest camp which is nestled among mountains, and we will be sleeping here tonight. Today’s hike not only delivers pretty view but also gives insights of what we are yet to encounter in Mardi Himal trek.

  • Max Altitude:2560m
  • Accommodation:Tea house/ Lodge
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Tea/ Coffee

Today’s stage is from Rest Camp to Badal Danda through Low Camp, today will be comparatively an easier day of trekking in the trail. We begin by steam through the wild looking primitive forests and now and then, teasing views of Annapurna South Ridge peaks also guides us.

Moving further and further up the slope, you make your way to Badal Danda which is where the path and journey ultimately ends with spectacular view of Annapurna Range, Mount Machhapuchhre & Mardi Himal, in the frontal line. From this vantage point, we can see the ridges that wee have crossed and the clouds beneath us.

  • Max Altitude:3250m
  • Accommodation:Tea House/ Lodge
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Tea/Coffee

The trek that starts from Badal Danda to High Camp reveals some stunning views starting the day that energize the spirit while climbing up to the place. The trail first provides spectacular sights of clouds beneath us and the nearby mountains. As we climb higher tree line decreases and gradually at a certain altitude, we get a vantage point to behold the Annapurna and Hiunchuli peaks.

The track takes us over treeless slopes of dry pastures, and along the steep and winding walls the thin tracks are cut out. These are mainly single file trails that can in some places accommodate only one or two individuals at a time; thus the allure of the treks. Look out especially for the Danphe, Nepal’s national bird which , if we are lucky, we may catch a glimpse of.

Afternoon is also good for absorbing the atmosphere and relaxing, as the weather conditions in the local area will not allow for further hiking. Today’s walk can be described as a great panorama of the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes and the feeling of success while on the course towards the area of high altitude.

  • Max Altitude:4100m
  • Accommodation:Tea House/ Lodge
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Tea/Coffee

The seventh day is the most fascinating yet a bit challenging where the participants will be moving from High Camp to Mardi Viewpoint and then back to Low Camp. The trail to Mardi’s viewpoint is a slightly different experience, as compared to conventional hiking routes, and is sure to attract thrill seekers. We are going to cross rocky hills by your vehicle , which needs serious concentration and powerful will. This is compensated with gorgeous scenery that can be regarded as unique and priceless.

After having soaked in all the beauty that the natural environment has to offer us, we start to make our way downwards towards Low Camp. Also, one should pay particular attention to the climatic conditions as they can be variable given the fact that the areas covered are at a relatively high altitude. Going back is similar to what we do here and in the same trail, there is always a good view to take photos of the surroundings and the plants and animals around the area. Not only do we feel today’s trek to be demanding physically but we also get to ground ourselves and increase our understanding of the Homer as we absorb the beauty of this place in the Himalayas and take home memories of this amazing trip.

  • Max Altitude:2990m
  • Accommodation:Tea House/ Lodge
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Tea/Coffee

At this eight day of our way, we are to leave Low Camp and get down towards Siding Village. The road creeps down a few hills before getting to Siding where we will spend our cozy and comfy night. Siding Village is an attractive village which is located between the Machhapuchhre and Mardi Himal trek and Mardi rivulet and has been decorated with terraced fields. This is one of the few villages, which is not as popular among tourists yet it offers true insight into the everyday life of the inhabitants and there are a few nice guest houses to stay.

We leave Siding via an exciting off-road journey and return back to our destination, the city of lakes, Pokhara. The scenery is beautiful, and travelers get to visit some of the rustic villages, catch a glimpse of the breathtaking water falls and ride alongside some of the Rivers that cuts across the area portraying the life of the people. Today we arrive in Pokhara where we can look back on our trekking experience while enjoying a fine meal to mark this memorable event together in the green and scenic promised lands of the Annapurna.

  • Max Altitude:827m
  • Accommodation:Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Tea/Coffee

On the ninth day of our journey, we have the option to either take a short flight or a scenic drive back to Kathmandu from Pokhara. The flight offers spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas, while the drive allows us to enjoy the countryside and local life along the way.

Once in Kathmandu, you have the opportunity to unwind and explore at your own pace. You may choose to stroll through the bustling streets of Thamel, known for its vibrant shops and markets offering a variety of souvenirs, handicrafts, and local treasures. Alternatively, immerse yourself in the cultural richness of Kathmandu by visiting historical sites, temples, or simply enjoying the local cuisine.

Accommodation

During the Mardi Himal Trek, trekkers have the luck of getting delicious food and comfortable lodges to give them the maximum trekking experience. Accommodation and meals are taken from the previous day until the day of the trek; usually, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Only breakfasts are included in the cost of Kathmandu and Pokhara, so you can try traditional Nepalese food and drinks at Nepalese cafes and restaurants of your choice.

It can be noted that the foods served by the lodges and teahouses in the Mardi Himal Trek are Nepalese foods. A variety of meals that inhabitants consume are Daal Bhat (rice and lentils), the staple diet, curry, and pickle; however, their menu consists of Tibetan, Continental, and Indian meals to satisfy a variety of clientele.

Drinks and meals will be available on our arrangement and shared in one of the finest three- or four-star hotels upon arrival in Kathmandu. These hotels provide warm lunches to end your tour and leave nothing more you can desire. In this trek, some accommodations, such as lodges and teahouses, are found at various points throughout the trek. These are averagely well developed to a level that one can relax in them after a day of trekking. Amalgamating with the trekking feel, most teahouses also have facilities in the trekking style, with unhygienic common toilets and bath places.

Note: For those who are interested in sharing a room, this is possible always indicating the preferences, and it is cheaper than the single option if the client did not make the request before the date of traveling.

Permits Required for the Mardi Himal Trek

TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System):

Anyone planning to trek in Nepal, for instance, to Everest Base Camp or Langtang Valley, must obtain a TIMS permit. This permit is compulsory on all the trekking trails in the district and costs 2000 NPR, roughly 17 USD or 15 Euros per head.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit:

If you plan to hike in the Annapurna region, you must have an ACAP Permit. This permit, which is under the National Trust for Nature Conservation, has been designed to protect and preserve the area's wildlife and natural background. Studies have shown that the money collected is then utilized for conservation purposes.

Therefore, the ACAP permit costs 3000 rupees, or approximately 25 USD, for a single entry and for any number of days of Annapurna trekking. These permits can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara, and different check points on the trekking trail maintain records of trekkers.

Guides and Porters

In planning for the Mardi Himal Trek to areas with altitudes of up to 4,100m through comparatively less populated regions, it is important to engage a professional and experienced leader. Our guides at Aura Vacation are trained, licensed, and experienced enough to be among the best and most competent in the region. Our drivers also receive extensive procedural training to address all prospects so that your trip is safe and fun. Since they have worked for many years, our guides can overcome any obstacles, which, therefore, guarantees that hiking with us will always be a joy.

Our next important company asset is our porters, which, as mentioned before, are crucial to the company's functioning. Our porters reported that they are always fully protected with all the necessary tools and are treated well under the company's policy. That is why we properly insure them to be ready for any problem, pay a satisfactory salary, and treat them with understanding. As for their health concerns, we strictly set the maximum load limit to twenty-five kilograms. These aspects paid to their needs result from our concern for their welfare and appreciation of their significant role in our treks.

Mountain Sickness At Altitude (AMS)

AMS is a categorized condition that tends to manifest in anyone who is at a high altitude where the oxygen level is low, hence the name altitude sickness. The condition appears because respiration becomes more difficult in such circumstances.

Manifestations of AMS are headache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, fatigue or weakness, difficulty falling asleep, poor appetite, and irritability or stress. It's crucial to take preventive measures to avoid AMS: wear warm clothing as it may be very cold, take a lot of water and balanced foods, and take your time while climbing because of the high altitude.

However if you develop signs that suggest you are unwell in any way, it is advised that you report same to your tour leader or guide. They may tell you to rest, or change the itinerary in a way that you will be able to handle your altitude sickness better, or even suggest remedies that could help. It is very important to drink much water and by following the words of your guide unwanted conditions will not occur. However, AMS prevention is preferred to cure its symptoms when they emerge already.
